What does drywall repair in Houston include?

Drywall repair in Houston is fixing the holes, cracks, failed seams and water damage in a home's walls and ceilings, matching the texture over the repair, and priming and painting it to match the wall around it. Sheetrock repair is the same job under its other name.
Rise and Prime Painting offers residential drywall repair in Houston, TX and North Houston: Tomball, Spring, The Woodlands, Conroe and Humble. Ray Gomez owns the company and has over 20 years in the trade, and he comes out to look at the damage himself before anything gets priced.
Because we patch the sheetrock and paint it too, there's no second contractor to book for the color. If the rest of the room needs a repaint, Ray can price it on the same walkthrough as interior house painting in Houston.

These are the drywall services Rise and Prime offers. The written proposal for your walls lists the ones your house needs.
Holes patched
Doorknob dents, anchor holes, a cut-out from a plumber.
A small hole gets filled and taped. A bigger one gets cut back to a clean square, backing goes in behind it, and a new piece of drywall is screwed in flush. Either way it ends up flat with the wall around it.
Water damage, after the leak is fixed
Stained, soft or sagging board made good once the source is corrected.
Once your plumber, roofer or AC tech has corrected the source, the water-damaged drywall is cut out or patched, the seams are taped, and the stain is primed so it doesn't bleed back through the paint.
Tape and seam repairs
Peeling tape, cracked joints and nail pops.
Tape that's lifted or bubbled comes off, and the joint is re-taped and finished. Nail pops are reset and covered, so they don't keep pushing back through the paint.
Skim coating
Thin compound over a whole wall that has too many marks to patch.
When a wall has years of small dings, patches on patches, or torn paper from old wallpaper, a skim coat spreads thin compound over the whole surface and it's sanded flat, so the wall reads as one surface under light.
Texture matching and restoration
The repair gets the same texture as the wall around it.
A textured wall or ceiling gets its texture matched over the repair, so the patch doesn't show up as a flat square in a textured room.
Priming and painting
The repair is finished when it is painted.
Fresh compound soaks up paint differently from the wall around it, which is why an unprimed patch shows through. The repair is primed, then painted, and the rest of the room can be repainted as part of the same job if you want it.
Water damaged ceiling repair starts with the leak.
Rise and Prime doesn't fix leaks. The drywall damage gets repaired once the source is corrected, whether that's a roof, an upstairs bathroom or an AC drain line.
The source comes first
Call the plumber, roofer or AC technician before you call a painter. A ceiling patched under a leak that's still running will stain and sag again, and then you're paying for the same repair twice.
Soft board comes out
Drywall that's soft, crumbling or sagging after water damage is cut back to firm board and a new piece goes in. A stain on board that's still sound can stay and be sealed.
Stains get primed
A water stain bleeds through ordinary paint, sometimes after the second coat. Priming over it is what keeps it from coming back as a brown ring a week after the job.
The texture goes back
A repaired section of a textured ceiling gets its texture matched before it's painted. If you'd rather have the whole ceiling flat, that's popcorn ceiling removal, which is its own job.
I had water damage on my ceiling along with several holes that needed to be repaired, and Ray did an excellent job.

Which drywall repair does your wall need?
The repair a wall needs depends on the condition of the board around the damage: a hole in sound drywall gets patched, damaged board gets cut out and replaced, and a wall covered in marks gets skim coated.
- The damaged section, cut back to a clean square
- Backing fixed inside the wall, so the patch has something to screw into
- A new piece of drywall, screwed in flush
- Tape over every seam
- Compound over the tape, feathered out wide and sanded
- Primer, then the finish color

A hole in sound board
A hole in board that's still firm gets patched. Nail holes and nail pops are filled, and a doorknob hole or a plumber's cut-out gets a new piece of drywall on backing, taped and finished.
Soft, crumbling or stained through
Board that's lost its strength won't hold a patch, so the damaged section is cut out to firm drywall and a new piece goes in. Water damage usually ends up here.
Peeling tape or a cracked seam
The joint failed, so the old tape comes off and the seam is re-taped and finished. Painting over lifted tape only hides it until the next humid summer.
Dozens of small marks
When patching one at a time would leave a wall of shiny squares, the whole wall is skim coated and sanded flat. Torn paper from old wallpaper removal is fixed the same way.

Ray looks at the damage
In Houston, Ray comes out to see the drywall himself. For most homes the written estimate comes on the spot, and the price is fixed for that scope.
The room is protected
Floors and furniture near the repair go under cover before anything is cut or sanded.
Cut, backed and patched
Damaged board is cut back to sound drywall, backing goes in where a patch needs it, and the new piece is screwed in flush.
Taped, skimmed, textured
The seams are taped, compound is feathered out and sanded, and the texture is matched to the wall or ceiling around it.
Primed, painted, walked
Primer, then the finish color. Then you walk the room with us, and the punch list is handled before the job is closed out.
One repair, start to finish.
One of Rise and Prime's drywall repairs, in order: the wall opened up, backing screwed in, and the patch skimmed and feathered out before primer. Drywall repairs and painting services go on one written estimate.

Drywall and ceiling repair questions.
How much does drywall repair cost in Houston?
Drywall repair in Houston is priced on the size of the damage, how many areas there are, whether it's a wall or a ceiling, the texture that has to be matched and how much of the room gets painted afterward, so Rise and Prime doesn't publish a flat price. The estimate is free. For most residential projects Ray writes it on the spot at the walkthrough, and the price is fixed for that scope.
Will you fix the leak that caused the water damage?
No, Rise and Prime repairs the drywall after the leak has been fixed, and the source has to be corrected first by whoever handles it: a plumber, a roofer or an AC technician. Patching a wet ceiling under an active leak only means patching it twice. Once the leak is dealt with, the water damage is cut out or patched, primed and painted.
Can you match my wall or ceiling texture?
Yes, texture matching and restoration are part of the repair, so a patch on a textured wall or ceiling gets the same texture as the surface around it before it's primed and painted. Ray will look at yours at the walkthrough. If you'd rather lose a popcorn texture altogether, that's a different job.
Do you repair ceilings as well as walls?
Yes, Rise and Prime does ceiling repair in Houston as well as walls: holes, cracked seams, water stains and sagging sections after a leak is fixed, with the ceiling texture matched and the ceiling primed and painted. Ceiling repair takes more protection underneath, because everything that's sanded or scraped overhead lands on the room below.
When should drywall be replaced instead of patched?
Drywall should be cut out and replaced when it's soft, crumbling, sagging or stained all the way through, which is common after water damage. A hole in otherwise sound board can be patched. Either way the damaged section is cut back to firm drywall, a new piece goes in, and the seams are taped, finished and painted.
Is it worth repairing drywall myself?
Filling a few nail holes yourself is worth it, and a tub of lightweight spackle does the job. Larger holes, water damage, textured walls and ceilings are where a DIY repair tends to show, because the hard part is getting the patch flat, textured and primed so it disappears under paint.
Can joint compound go over torn drywall paper?
Joint compound shouldn't go straight over torn drywall paper, because the moisture in it soaks the loose paper and makes it bubble. The torn paper is cut back and sealed with a primer first, then compound goes over it. It's a common problem after wallpaper removal, and it's one of the reasons a wall ends up skim coated.
What is skim coating, and when does a wall need it?
Skim coating is spreading a thin coat of joint compound over a whole wall or ceiling and sanding it flat, so a surface with too many marks to patch one at a time reads as smooth. It's the fix for walls with years of small dings, patches on top of patches, or torn paper left behind by old wallpaper.
Does the repair get primed and painted?
Yes, priming and painting are part of drywall repair at Rise and Prime, because bare compound and new board take paint differently from the painted wall around them. A patch that's painted without primer can show as a dull square once the paint dries. The rest of the room can be repainted at the same time.
Is drywall repair different in a house built before 1978?
Drywall repair in a house built before 1978 can disturb paint that contains lead, and under the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, paid work that disturbs more than six square feet of painted surface in a room has to be done by a certified firm. Rise and Prime is an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm. Mention the year your house was built when you book. The EPA's rule for contractors
