Painting cabinets vs replacing them depends on whether anything is wrong with the cabinets themselves or only with how they look. If the boxes are sound and the layout works, paint changes the color and the finish and keeps everything else, counters included. If the boxes are damaged, the layout doesn’t suit the kitchen or the doors won’t hold a finish, new cabinets are the better money.
The question tends to come up in two kinds of kitchen, one dated but sound, with dark cherry or honey oak cabinets whose doors still close properly, and one with damage, like a swollen sink base or doors peeling in sheets. In the second kind, the answer depends on how far the damage goes: minor damage is still a painting job, and only the box itself failing points to a full replacement.
Is it cheaper to paint cabinets or replace them?
Painting is the cheaper option for a kitchen whose cabinets are structurally sound, where the boxes are solid and only the finish has aged. Our normal range for cabinet painting is $3,000 to $5,000 and up. HomeGuide’s cabinet cost guide puts new kitchen cabinets at $150 to $500 per linear foot installed, or $4,500 to $15,000 for a kitchen, including labor and materials.
Those replacement figures cover the cabinets. A tear-out can also bring new countertops, plumbing adjustments and wall patching with it, and none of that comes up when the boxes stay where they are. The two ranges only meet at the small end, where a compact kitchen gets basic stock cabinets.

What does cabinet painting cost, and what moves the price?
Rise and Prime Painting’s normal range for cabinet painting is $3,000 to $5,000 and up. That’s a range for planning, and the number for your kitchen depends on what’s in it, starting with the count of doors and drawer fronts, which says more about the job than square footage does. The price moves with these.
- Cabinet doors and drawer fronts, counted one by one
- Cabinet boxes, counted separately from the doors
- An island, which adds boxes and faces to paint
- The existing cabinet finish, since converting stained wood to painted is its own driver
- Condition and repairs, from loose doors to damaged edges
- A major color change, such as dark wood going white

A small kitchen with a lot of drawers can have more fronts than a bigger one with wide doors, which is why the count tells more than the size of the room. A written estimate is where the range becomes a number. It should show the count it was built on, the prep and any repairs, so you can see exactly what the price pays for.

Do painted kitchen cabinets hold up?
A painted finish on existing cabinets holds up when the prep is right. Sherwin-Williams traces peeling over hard, slick surfaces to paint that had nothing to grip, and its fix is to sand glossy surfaces dull and use a bonding primer if they still feel slick. Factory cabinet finishes are that kind of surface, which is why cleaning, degreasing and sanding come before any primer.

Where a painted finish does wear, it’s at the handles and along the edges that get bumped. A touch-up from the same batch of paint blends best, so keep what’s left over.
When should you replace kitchen cabinets instead?
Cabinet replacement is the right call in three situations, and paint can’t fix any of them.
- The boxes are water damaged past repair. A sink base that has soaked up a slow leak can swell and soften, and paint on top of it won’t make it sound again.
- The layout doesn’t work. Paint changes the color of a cabinet. It doesn’t change where the cabinet sits, how deep it is or how the kitchen flows.
- The doors won’t hold a finish. Thermofoil that has started to lift is one example. Deslaurier, a cabinet manufacturer, says peeling thermofoil doors are nearly impossible to repair without replacing them.
Replacement also makes sense when the goal is a new door style, taller upper cabinets or a changed configuration, since paint only changes the finish on the cabinets you have.

Water damage is worth a closer look before a whole kitchen is written off. A stain on the floor of one sink base says the leak needs fixing, and whether that box can be saved is a separate question from the cabinets around it.
Where does cabinet refacing fit?
Refacing sits between painting and full cabinet replacement. The cabinet boxes stay, the face frames and exposed sides are covered in a new veneer, and the doors and drawer fronts are replaced, so the door style changes along with the color.
HomeGuide’s refacing cost guide puts refacing at $150 to $450 per linear foot, or $5,000 to $13,000 for an average kitchen. The material sets much of the price, with laminate refacing at $2,000 to $4,000 for an average-sized kitchen, wood veneer at $2,500 to $8,000 and solid wood at $5,000 to $16,000.

Refacing suits a kitchen whose boxes and layout are fine and whose door style is the problem. When the doors are fine and the color is the problem, painting keeps them.
Refacing doesn’t touch the boxes themselves, so it shares painting’s limits. Water-damaged boxes and a layout that doesn’t work are still replacement problems, whatever goes on the front, and new doors have to be ordered before the work can start.
How long does each take, and what happens to your kitchen?
Most cabinet projects run 3 to 5 days. Access to the kitchen is limited in periods during that time, and we’ll communicate access and reassembly timing before work begins.
The spraying is done on site with the kitchen contained, and the standard process takes the doors and drawer fronts off to be prepped and finished flat. The work moves from cleaning and degreasing to prep and sanding, repairs, priming, sanding and detailing, the finish coats and reassembly, with soft-close hinges fitted where the cabinets are compatible.
Replacing cabinets takes longer, because new cabinets are ordered before anything comes out, and installing them can bring countertop, plumbing and wall work along with it.
How do you decide between painting and replacing?
Four checks answer a lot of the question before anyone prices the job.
Look inside the sink base
Swelling, soft spots or water stains mean the box has taken on water. Fix the leak before judging the box.
Walk the layout
If the kitchen works as it is, paint keeps it. Moving a cabinet is a replacement job.
Check the door faces
A smooth vinyl skin lifting near heat is thermofoil, and it points toward new doors.
Decide on the door style
Liking the style and not the color is a paint job. A new style means refacing or replacing.
